How to get Timeless Images from your Photo Session
Timeless, it’s a word that photographers like to throw around like confetti to describe their images. But the truth is… an image can be beautiful and NOT be timeless. So, how do you get timeless images from your photo session?
Well, it requires effort from both you AND me! So if you want timeless images, here’s what we gotta’ do!
Nix the Props
If you like minimalistic, & people focused images, i'm your girl! Whether its a newborn baby, a 2 year old child, bride and groom, or an entire family you’ll notice that simplicity is one word that will describe my images.
I don't do lots of fancy props, crazy outfits, bows bigger than the child's head, graphic onesies, 20 different backgrounds, or fake graphics. Because my goal for photographs is simple and timeless. I want each of my sessions to look like it could've been taken in 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, or any decade up until now and still take people's breath away.
I don't want your eyes to be distracted by props and accessories. I want them to be drawn to the people you loved enough to get photographed.
Clothing
Simple, Not Showy! Trendy things are usually in a variety of colors, crazy designs, or have something that really stands out. While this can be super fun, it will likely be out of style in just a few years. So, in regards to clothing, steer clear of trends. Focus on clothing that could’ve been worn in any decade and been considered beautiful.
Colors
When it comes to colors pick muted tones, blush pink in stead of pink, dusty pale blue instead of royal blue, khaki instead of denim, lavender instead of purple, whites, grays, etc. are all really great choices. By using these simple and neutral colors, it will always seem fashionable. Timeless photographs feel like they were meant to be there, if they were hung in your home, it would blend naturally.
Our eyes love contrast and are drawn to anything with surprising colors for better or for worse which is why choosing a neutral color palette helps us to focus on the people in the photos.
Need some inspiration, head over to Pinterest and type in the words “neutral color palette” and prepare to be amazed with results like these:
Simple Backgrounds
Clearing clutter, anything that is unnecessary is a huge factor of timeless images. A busy background can distract people from the subject and completely change the mood you’re going for.
Moments
The best photos are the ones that capture candid moments. They were premeditated or copied from Pinterest! But the older you get the more difficult it is to act natural in front of the camera. So make sure you find a photographer who is good at creating moments… NOT poses. Part of that means finding a photographer that you connect with! A really great sign is if you feel as though you could be friends with that person! For example, I want my clients to be excited to see me, to give me a hug, to want to send me a Christmas Card at the end of the year. All-in-all, if you pick someone you’re comfortable with, your going to end up with photos that speak!
