8 Tricks to Keep Kids Happy for Sunset Family Photo Sessions

In the photography word we have a word for the last 2 hrs before the sun sets, we call it “golden hour.” We call it that because it is GOLDEN. It gives the best lighting, no harsh shadows, beautiful colors, and is all around a 10/10. But, as a photography of families who often have littles, I know that lots of moms worry about keeping their kids up that late and as a mom of 3, I get it. So, I’ve put together some tips and tricks to help you keep those kids happy for sunset photos so that you can be happy too!

TRICK #1- Keep Calm

Let’s be real here, folks. 9 times out of 10 we get more stressed or “high-strung” when it comes to preparing for a photo session. But the truth is, your kids can feel that energy and when they do, don’t be surprised when they refuse to nap that day. The day that you REALLY need them to. So, do whatever it takes to keep yourself calm. Switch up the routine a bit, take them to the park, burn off tons of extra energy. And then, don’t rush them to nap time, give them a bath, sing them a song, read them a story, etc.

TRICK #2- Push Back

Push back the bedtimes and the nap times. If your kid usually goes to sleep earlier than sunset, you could try moving their bedtime later and later in 15 minute increments in the week leading up to your session. Then, gradually move it back afterwards.

TRICK #3- Full Tummy’s

Hungry kids don’t make for happy kids. Heck, hungry me doesn’t make for a happy me, and i’m 31! So, make sure everyone eats dinner a couple hours before your family photo session. You can also bring some non-messy snacks with you in case someone gets hungry. Things like pretzels or apple slices are a great choice.

TRICK #4- Time of Year

The sun sets earlier in the day during the fall and winter. In fact, after the time change in November, the sunsets around 4:30 pm. So, a sunset session might not be as “out of the question” as you might think.

TRICK #5- Clothing

Dress for the weather. If you try to put a toddler in a sleeveless dress in October when its 50 degrees, of course they won’t be happy! We want your kids to be comfortable. When its hot, lather them in sunscreen and show some skin. Bring along some portable fans and ice waters. When it’s chilly, make sure your kid is covered up. Especially babies and toddlers, their pants ride up and then their little bare-skinned legs are showing. Putting some thin leggings or extra tall socks underneath helps. Plan for layers!

TRICK #6- Location

Pick a location that your kids have never been too. When there is a new place to explore, kids generally forget about sleep and are more interested in exploring. So, rather than your favorite park around the corner, take one of my suggestions for a family photo location and just commit to having a fun, new adventure with your family.

TRICK #7- Backup Plan

You can do everything in your power to keep those littles happy and awake but sometimes you just gotta’ have a backup plan. Make sure you bring their favorite toy, stuffed animal or blanket, but don’t let your child know about it or see it. Then, if the time comes that you’ve tried everything and they still aren’t happy, you can give it to them.

TRICK #8- Fun

Hire a photographer who is play-based and dedicated to making it a fun experience for you all. When kids have someone laughing and playing games with them, they’ll be BEGGING for the session to continue even when it’s over. P.S. That photographer is me! ;) If you’re looking for a Central Illinois Family Photographer near Lincoln, Peoria, Bloomington, Springfield, or Decatur, get more info by filling out my contact form HERE.
